Eben Hardware is an award-winning agribusiness established in 2014 by Benonia Machavuda in Masvingo Province, with five branches in Masvingo, Mwenezi and Chivi-Ngundu. Eben Hardware director Benonia Machavuda was named the national Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Businesswoman of the Year for 2026. The company supplies poultry products, animal feeds, agrochemicals, veterinary products and agricultural inputs.Under the CAUSEWAY Project, implemented by ZADT with support from the Swedish and British Embassies, Eben Hardware received $40,000 to expand services to smallholder farmers in Boroma, Masvingo Rural District. The financing strengthened its input credit facility, ranging from $100 to $350, enabling farmers to access chicks, feed, vaccines and other inputs without immediate payment. To date, 122 farmers 87 women and 35 youths have benefited. Combined with training in poultry production, financial literacy, business management and livestock health, the model has helped farmers improve production, reduce livestock losses, strengthen incomes and participate more confidently in commercial agriculture, while positioning Eben Hardware as a key link between smallholder farmers and markets.
At 27, Robson Geja of Zaka Rural District is building a diversified agricultural enterprise after accessing finance through the CAUSEWAY Project. Following Access to Finance training, technical support and mentorship, he secured a $1,200 loan from Empower Bank at 2.5% interest per month, repayable over six months with a three-month grace period. The financing enabled him to invest in 700W solar panels, a 2hp pump, 400m x 32mm HDPE pipes, seeds, chemicals and fertilisers, improving reliable water supply and production capacity. Today, he has 2,000 cucumbers at fruition stage, 2,000 Kito hybrid watermelons and okra at germination stage. He also sells English giant rape and covo at $0.50 per bundle, generating at least $60 profit monthly. He has diversified into piggery, fish production, road runners and rabbitry, while creating casual employment for local youths during planting, tomato trellising and harvesting. The most significant change is his transition from a small-scale farmer with limited productive capacity to a more resilient, market-oriented young agripreneur with reliable infrastructure, multiple income streams and growing capacity to create employment within his community.
